Ronald (Ron) Ray Hanks, 88, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on 8/23/2019. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY.
Ron was born in Crossville, IL on October 3, 1930, the son of Roy and Gladys Hanks. He graduated from Crossville High School in 1947 where he was a standout student and athlete. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, and following his service graduated magna cum laude from Indiana State University.
Ron joined Wabash Fibre Box Company in Terre Haute, IN, where he would retire as Vice President and General Manager at the facilities he helped establish in Lexington, KY. In nearly 40 years of service at Wabash Fibre, he's remembered fondly by the numerous people he mentored over the years. Ron was an avid horse racing and UK basketball fan and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1975.
While in the Air Force, Ron met and married the love of his life, Beverly Jean Wright. They were wed on July 10, 1954 at the Vermilion Methodist Church in Vermilion, IL, and were married 58 years until her death.
Ron was especially proud of his family and many of his coworkers knew his grandchildren before they ever met them. His continual support, encouragement, sense of humor and storytelling will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children Robin Hanks and wife Carolyn of Bloomington, IL, Becky Harris and husband Brad of Avon, IN; his grandchildren Jason Hogan, Ronnie Harris, Stephanie Nutall, and Jennifer Homan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beverly, his brother James Leroy Hanks, and sister Alice Louise Hanks.
Graveside services will be 2:30pm Wednesday August 28 in Vermilion Cemetery, Vermilion, IL. Visitation is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Crossville United Methodist Church, 408 2nd Street, Crossville, IL 62827.
