Known to his family and friends as Bob, he was born March 31, 1932, in Manito, Illinois, to Knud Svendsen and Kathryn Svendsen. After graduating from Spalding Institute in Peoria, Illinois, and Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bob worked for his father, a contractor in Pekin, Illinois, for several years. On October 26, 1957, he married Carol Ann Mahoney at St. Thomas's Church in Peoria Heights, Illinois. Starting in 1964, Bob worked until his retirement as an appraiser for the Illinois Department of Transportation in Paris, Illinois.
Bob enjoyed his retirement, which included fulfilling a lifelong dream to visit his extended family in Denmark. Berthing his boat at the Conservation Club marina of North Muskegon, Michigan, he sailed for many years on Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. A man of strong faith in God, Bob claimed his greatest accomplishment in life was being the father of eight children.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Keyster, his brother, Byron Svendsen, and his son, Kurt Svendsen.
Bob is survived by his wife, Carol, his sisters Sonja Stanford and Margie Baxter, as well as his brothers, Dan Svendsen, David Svendsen, Tom Svendsen, Jack Svendsen, Mike Svendsen, and Terry Svendsen. Other survivors include his sons, Knud Svendsen and Niels Svendsen as well as his daughters, Karen Werner, Inger Svendsen, Kirsten Van Hoy, Janna Beattie, and Heidi Somers.
