August 22, 1950 – September 14, 2014
Richard Allen Phillips, age 64, of Dennison, IL passed away 8:50 a.m., Sunday September 14, 2014 at his home due to an apparent heart attack.
Services are 11 a.m., Friday September 19, 2014 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Visitation is Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ or Boy Scouts of America.
He was born August 22, 1950 in Paris, IL the son of Kenneth J. and Margaret Rose Butler Phillips.
Richard is survived by his mother; his sons Matt Phillips of Sacramento, CA and Chris Phillips of Terre Haute, IN; his brother Tom (Linda) Phillips of Chrisman; and his partner Connie Bowman of Crawfordsville, IN.
He was preceded in death by his father on June 18, 2014.
Richard attended Paris schools and played clarinet in the school band for two years, graduating from Paris High School in 1968.
He was an active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in his youth thru high school. Richard was a junior deacon for three years and a deacon for one year. He attended Vacation Bible School and Sunday School for several years. He served as president of ChiRho for one year and as secretary-treasurer for a year and was a member of the World Outreach Department.
Richard joined the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and received the "Order of the Arrow" Award and his "Eagle Scout" Award in 1968, the highest award that can be earned by a scout. He stayed in scouting serving in various capacities where he saw his two sons and brother receive the "Eagle Scout Award". He worked with scouting for 25 years in Paris, Marshall and Terre Haute, IN.
After graduating from P.H.S. in 1968 he attended the University of Illinois summer training program for engineering technicians sponsored by Illinois Department of Transportation in Paris. He graduated with honors receiving the highest grade in the district. He was employed by I.D.O.T. District 5 in Paris where he worked inside in the office, the asphalt department and the surveying department retiring in 2000 after 31 years.
Richard enlisted in the Indiana Air Force National Guard in 1982 where served as a Senior Airman in the Security Police Unit. He was a member of the American Legion Post 211. He loved flying and attended numerous air shows. He always wanted to fly with the Blue Angels.
After retirement he joined the Swinging Mates Square Dance Club of Terre Haute, IN. He attended several dances in various out of town locations with his partner Connie.
