DALLAS, Texas — Richard Lee "Dick" Mattingly, 80, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021. He was a retired Navy pilot and retired Dallas police officer.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at his residence. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Saturday September 25, 2021 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Paris, IL Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mr. Mattingly was born in Paris, the son of the late John and Ethel Dunn Mattingly and was the youngest of 12 siblings.
He graduated from Tri-State College in Angola, Ind., with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. He met and married Janis Hart during his time in Angola, and she survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Diana (TJ) Allen; sons Scott Mattingly and Brian (Sandra) Mattingly; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Lee Mattingly.
Mr. Mattingly joined the Navy and began his training command as a student naval aviator in March 1963.
His career as a naval officer spanned a total of 23 years with squadrons VA-125, VA-153, VA-106, VA-122 and VA-146. He also served as a flight instructor with VT-7. His tours of duty included assignments on aircraft carriers U.S.S. America (CV-66) and U.S.S. Coral Sea. He made more than 380 aircraft carrier landings in A-4s, A-7s, F-11s, T-2s and T-28s. He received numerous military decorations during his service with the Navy. Shortly after his active duty with the Navy came to a close in 1975, he enlisted as a reserve officer until his retirement as a commander in 1991.
After his active military service concluded, he began a career with the Dallas Police Department in 1977. He served Dallas PD for 17 years as a corporal and field training officer. He retired in 1994 from DPD and continued serving the city of Dallas as an information technology analyst from 1994 until 2006.
He was loved and adored by his family and friends and will be missed deeply. Fly High, Midnight.
