Peter Michael Voelz's Obituary
Peter Michael Voelz 75 of Paris, IL passed away at 5 a.m., Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. David Zimmerman as celebrant.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or Holt Sahathai Foundation (Adoption Agency) in care of the funeral home.
Peter earned his PhD from the University of Michigan. He was a professor at Eastern Illinois University for thirty four years where he taught Journalism and History. He taught at the junior high and high school levels for fourteen years. He was a teacher and Interim Principal at St. Mary's School. Peter was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Rosary Group, and Knights of Columbus Council 860. He served as a lector, cantor, choir member and Eucharistic Minister at the church. He assisted with youth ministry, the R.C.I.A. program and the squire program. He served as Squire Counselor for three years.
Peter was born February 13, 1940 in Lancaster, Wisconsin the son of the late Donald W. and Bertha Schmitz Voelz.
Peter married Karen Meyer Voelz on August 6, 1971 in Harper Woods, Michigan. He is survived by his wife Karen; his children: Nicole (Tim) Gonzalez of San Antonio, TX and Andrew Voelz of Bangkok, Thailand; his grandchildren Daniel, David, Sofia and Joshua Gonzalez; his siblings Steve Voelz of Elizabeth, IL and Sharon (Ken) Chapman of Dubuque, Iowa.
