Peter J. Rooney, age 80 of Paris, passed away at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Horizon Health Paris Community Hospital. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Illinois Department of Transportation, retiring September 28, 2001. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, life member of Knights of Columbus Council 860 and a Fourth Degree member of Assembly 219, a member of American Legion Post 211, a member of BPO Elks #812, a member of Eagles AERIE # 4000, and a member of 40 & 8 Voiture Locale #594. Mr. Rooney was 1 st Sergeant (Retired) of the Army National Guard, serving from 1956 to 1987.
Born September 17, 1938 in Vermilion County, Illinois, he was the son of the late Martin Leo and Ellenora Elizabeth (Kritz) Rooney. He married M. Jean Murphy April 18, 1986 in Paris and she survives. Other survivors include a son Brent P. Rooney of Monticello, Illinois, a daughter Kathleen "Katie" Jakobsen of Longmont, Colorado, a step-son Bradley Conine of Marshall, Illinois, three grandchildren; Kelley Joan Rooney of Monticello, Illinois, and Luke Evan Jakobsen and Emma Grace Jakobsen, both of Longmont, Colorado, and five step-grandchildren; Steven Conine of London, England, Travis Conine of Terre Haute, Indiana, Cody Conine of Marshall, Illinois, Jennifer Conine of Nashville, Tennessee, and Becky Elliott of Marshall, Illinois.
Following cremation, a memorial visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 in the Gathering Space at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Valery Burusu officiating and Honor Guard provided by Fourth Degree members of Knights of Columbus Assembly 219. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 211. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
