Opal Landes, age 104 of Paris, passed away at 7:38 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Paris Community Hospital. Born August 3, 1911 in a farmhouse near Dudley, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Mary Josephine (Thiel) Goodpaster. She lived on a farm in Edgar County nearly her whole life. She enjoyed farm work, in particular, raising chickens. She took care of a large garden and canned for several years. She made wonderful homemade pies, rolls, and noodles. Mrs. Landes also loved to travel, visiting every state but one in the United States, and had traveled abroad throughout England and Scottland where she saw the Royal Family at the Braemar Scottish Games when she was 80 years old. She was active for many years in the Bell Ridge Christian Church, was a 4-H leader, a Grandmother's Club member, Home Extension member, Rebecca Lodge member, Dorcas Club member, was a member of card clubs, and also was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. In her later years, she enjoyed reading, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and playing solitaire on her computer. After graduating Paris High School in 1929, she attended Wesleyan University in Normal, Illinois until 1931. She quit school because of the Great Depression and began teaching at the Crossroads School, a one room school in Buck Township. After two years at Crossroads School, she began teaching at Conlogue School, a larger one room school, and then at Bell Ridge School. She taught for ten years until she married. She married Ray S. Landes of Elbridge January 1, 1942 in Paris. He passed away January 12, 1971. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law Lee Herzberger on May 11, 2012. Survivors include her children; Phillip (Judy) Landes of Paris, Virginia (Roger Newman) Landes of El Dorado Hills, California, and Sharon Landes Herzberger of Columbus, Indiana, six grandchildren; Christian (Amy) Landes of Paris, Nathan (Alicia) Landes of Highland Park, Illinois, Jason (Lynda) Landes of Bloomington, Illinois, Thaddeus Herzberger of Marion, Illinois, Zachary (Kristin) Herzberger of Mansfield, Ohio, Alicia (Kevin) Rankin of Columbus, IN, and Lisa Hodgson of England, and thirteen great grandchildren. Visitation for Mrs. Landes will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2016 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Edgar Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Paris Community Hospital Swing Bed or Bell Ridge Christian Church.
