Maynard Luverne
Toensing
September 3, 1942 – November 19, 2022
Maynard LuVerne Toensing went home to be with his heavenly father on November 19, 2022.
A memorial service for Maynard and his brother, Clayton Toensing, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church in Paris, Illinois. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the V.A. Cemetery in Danville, Illinois. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Maynard was born in Atwater, Minnesota on September 3, 1942, the son of the late Erwin and Rachel (Krug) Toensing. He was baptized into Christ later that month. The family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico when Maynard was nine years old. There he attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and School. He was confirmed in Christ in 1957. It was also at Immanuel that he met the love of his life, Judy Suffern. Maynard and Judy were married on July 6, 1963. They had three children, Maynard Jr., Faith, and Andrew.
Following high school, Maynard joined the United States Air Force and served for four years. He then began working for the family business, Erwin & Sons, which he later took over and ran until 1989. He also attended the University of New Mexico and graduated with a BA in Mechanical Engineering. Maynard retired and he and Judy moved to Paris, Illinois in 2011. While living in Paris, Maynard worked for H&R Block in Marshall, Illinois and served the Paris community delivering meals for Peace Meals. Following his cancer diagnosis, Maynard moved to Crete, Nebraska to be near family for his last months.
Maynard coached youth baseball and enjoyed playing and managing recreational softball. He enjoyed time with his family, including trips in the family RV. He loved having conversations with people, where he often said little but nodded and smiled a lot. While working at Erwin and Sons, wife Judy ran childcare out of the family home, and Maynard became lovingly known as Poppy to the children of the daycare. But above all, Maynard loved to serve his Savior. He was diligently faithful in attending worship his whole life. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, and then Grace Lutheran Church, Paris, he served the church in many capacities over the years including choir member, decon, treasurer, recording worship services, and greeter. While living in Paris, he also served on the board of Grace Lutheran Village. Maynard was a quiet spoken man, but witnessed to Jesus loudly through his actions - and his baseball caps.
Maynard is preceded in death by parents Erwin Toensing and Rachel Krug, brothers Gene Toensing and Clayton Toensing, sister Carolyn Homp, and wife Judith (Suffern) Toensing.
He is survived by son Maynard (Shelley) Toensing Jr. of Crete, Nebraska; daughter Faith Toensing (fiancé Jerry Hatley) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son Andrew Toensing of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister Gloria (Jake) Krebs of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; grandsons Steven Toensing and Jacob (Morgan) Toensing and great-grandchildren Judah and Ava; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Child Development Center in Paris, Illinois or to Immanuel Lutheran School in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
