Mabel I. Shumaker's Obituary

Mabel I. Shumaker, 98 of Paris, Illinois, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family January 23 at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois. She was lifelong resident of Edgar County, teaching school at Mattoon High School, Redmon High School, Brocton High School and Shiloh Schools until her retirement in 1977. After her retirement she remained active for many years as the coordinator for the American Red Cross Blood Drives in Edgar County and in Otterbein United Methodist Church programs, teaching Sunday School class for many years. She was a member of the Edgar County Housing Authority Board and was an after school tutor for Wenz School through her church. She was active in other volunteer work as well. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, needlework and playing games with the family, among other things. Born November 8, 1916 in Redmon, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late John and Mabel (North) Thiel. She married Seibert Shumaker November 29, 1943, he preceded her in death September 13, 1972. She is survived by two children, Jayne (Bill) Barnhart of Clearwater, Florida and Harold (Carol) Shumaker of Buffalo, Illinois. She also leaves behind five grandchildren; Ann Barnhart (Brian Rodgers) of Richmond, Indiana, Dave (Mandy) Barnhart of Clearwater, Florida, Jon Shumaker of Wood River, Illinois, Sarah (Dave) Degarmo of Quincy, Illinois and Leah Shumaker of Buffalo, Illinois, and three great grandchildren; Dade Self of Quincy and Cage and Faith Barnhart of Clearwater. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and three sisters.
Visitation for Mrs. Shumaker will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 26 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 27 in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Edgar Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes or Otterbein United Methodist Church.
