Dr. Leland A. Phipps, age 64 of Paris, Illinois, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Dr. Phipps was a graduate of Northwestern University with a B.S. in engineering and his MD from the University of Illinois Medical Center. He served his residency in Family Practice at the University of Kansas and joined the staff of the Paris Medical Center Clinic in 1981, where he has practiced for the past 36 years. He is a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, as well as the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Edgar County Medical Society, Southern Illinois Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, American Diabetes Association, and the World Organization of Family Doctors. Born November 20, 1952 in Kankakee, Illinois, he is the son of the late Ogden A. and Margaret Jean (Honnold) Phipps. He is survived by Carol (Spaulding) Phipps, his wife of 35 years, and their two sons: Michael William Phipps of Urbana, Illinois and Franklin Oliver Phipps, who is engaged to Kelsey Elaine Shaffer of Nashville, Tennessee. Leland has a brother Thomas O. Phipps of Afton, Oklahoma, a sister Jean (Phipps) Hoyle and her husband Nick of Woodridge, Illinois. He is the nephew of Julie Ann Lund and the late Judge Carl Lund of Paris and a cousin to their three daughters: Dr. Julie Jean (Lund) Dollins, Stephanie (Lund) Drake, and Tricia (Lund) Batson. Visitation for Dr. Phipps will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (CST) Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Paris. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM (CST) Friday, May 26, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Paris. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Phipps' name to the Paris Community Hospital Foundation at 721 E Court St, Paris, IL 61944.
