Rev. John Michael Savoree
Father Jack Savoree passed away September 18, 2018. He was born February 13, 1937 in Paris, Illinois, the son of John M. and M. Dolores (Gillogly) Savoree. Father Jack attended two years at Paris High School and then transferred to St. Henry's Prep from 1953-1955. He then attended St. Mary's of the Lake Seminary from 1955-1963. John was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest on May 25, 1963 in the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Springfield, IL by the Most Rev. William A. O'Connor. Jack performed his solemn mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris, IL on May 26, 1963.
Father Jack was blessed with assignments in the Springfield Diocese which included: St. Elizabeth, Robinson, IL; St. Mary, Taylorville, IL; St. James, Decatur, IL; St. Maurice, Morrisonville, IL; St. Ambrose, Godfrey, IL; St. Mary, Brussels, IL; St. Denis, Shipman, IL; St. John the Evangelist, Medora, IL; St. Elizabeth, Granite City, IL; Immaculate Conception, Mattoon, IL; St. Louis, Nokomis, IL; St. Barbara, Witt, IL; Sacred Heart, Franklin, IL; St. Boniface, Edwardsville, IL; St. Mary, Pawnee, IL; St. Clare, Altamont, IL; St. Anne, Edgewood, IL; and St. Mary, St. Elmo, IL.
Father Jack was preceded in death by his Grandma, Mom and Dad, his brothers Bill and Jim and his sisters Caroline and Mary Ann. He is survived by his two brothers Mark (Karen) Savoree of Paris, IL and Kevin (Pam) Savoree of Carmel, IN. He is also survived by brother-in-law Tom Morrisey and sister-in-law Linda Savoree. Jack had a very close relationship with all of his nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces. Jack also enjoyed many friendships with many close friends and colleagues. His last act as a Catholic priest was to baptize his great-nephew, Lucas Michael Boland.
Wake prayer services for Father Jack will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with visitation to follow from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or to the Edgar County Humane Society.
