John Patrick "Pat" Harrington, 89, of Urbana and formerly of Paris and Arcola, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the Champaign County Nursing Home. He was born January 10, 1926 in Humboldt, Illinois, the son of Peter Joseph and Nell Haley Harrington. He married Norma Jean Bristow of Paris, Ill. on June 16, 1951 in Paris. Surviving are: four children: Mary Catherine (Richard) Cureton of Ann Arbor, MI; John Steven of Denver, CO; Michelle Anne (John) Gray of Long Beach, CA; and Susan Jean (Ed) Aikman of Urbana, Ill. ; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren ; a brother, James (Marge) Harrington of Arcola, Ill.; and twenty-three nieces and nephews. His wife, six siblings: Thomas, Mary Jane (Saunders), Joseph, Helen, Marcia Joan (Conley) and Elizabeth "Libby" (Inyart), and three nieces preceded him in death. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran, serving from 1944 until 1946 at the rank of sergeant as a tail gunner in the Pacific Theater. Following graduation from Syracuse University, Pat worked for the Illinois State Highway Department, District 5, acquiring land for road building and right-of-ways. He then joined the Kroger Company in Peoria, Ill., acquiring land for stores throughout central Illinois. He moved to Urbana, Illinois in 1967 where he co-developed the Sunnycrest Shopping Center; he then worked for University Asphalt and Mid-America Sand and Gravel, retiring in 1994. He was an active volunteer at the Paris Community Hospital following retirement. Pat was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris, was a Fourth Degree member and Past Faithful Navigator of Knights of Columbus Council 860, and was a member and Past President of the Illinois Aggregate Producers Association. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home in Paris with wake prayer services at 4 p.m. Tuesday; Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, October 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris with interment immediately following in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or Carle Hospice.
