John R. Mercer, age 74, of Paris, passed away at 9:48 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living in Chrisman, Illinois.

All services will be private. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home is assisting the family.

John was born on October 7, 1946 in Paris, Illinois the son of the late James and Alta Rhoads Mercer. He married Vicki Wright on December 15, 1967 in Paris.

He obtained his engineering degree from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. After graduation, John went on to join the United States Army where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. After finishing his military service, he began his career at the State of Illinois Department of Transportation as an engineer tech.

John was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Paris, and a member of the Elks Lodge 812.

He is survived by his wife: Vicki Mercer of Paris; his children: James Mercer of St. Louis, Missouri, and Heather (Eric Core) Claypool of Glendale, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to the Edgar County Humane Society or to a charity of the donor's choice.
