Mr. John Michael Levings, age 58 of Wallace, NC, passed away on February 07, 2016. He was active until the end of his life, living as he had for over 50 years, serving his community and his family. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Karen Levings, his two daughters, Lauren Levings and Cory Levings, his parents, Dr. Charles Sandford Levings III and Mary Catherine Carroll Levings of Raleigh, NC, his sisters, Carol Strickland of Fuquay Varina, NC, Karin Levings of Raleigh, NC and Lisa Gaylord and husband Rick of Matthews, NC, two sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Robinson and husband Steve of Wallace, NC and Gayle Atkinson and husband Willie of Currie, NC, nieces, Stacy and Kristin Strickland of Fuquay Varina, NC, Nicole Gaylord of Matthews, NC, Danielle Strickland and husband Phillip, Katie Robinson of Wallace, NC and Melissa Atkinson of Currie, NC, nephews, Alex Gaylord of Matthews, Joseph Atkinson of Currie, NC and Jonathan Atkinson of Currie, NC. John is survived locally by his uncle: William J. (Willie) Zieren and wife Joan of Charleston, IL and his cousin Tom Carroll and wife Judy of Paris, IL.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents: Charles S. and Catherine Whiteside Levings, Jr., Barbara Crabtree Levings, W.A. and Pearl M. Finney Zieren, and Thomas E. Carroll.
John was born on June 20, 1957 in Paris, Illinois. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. While living in Wilmington, he met his wife, Karen Teachey Levings. They moved to Wallace, NC in 1997 where he accepted the position of owner/operator of the Sears franchised dealer store. John was an active member of the town having served as President of the Wallace Chamber of Commerce and as a Board Member on the Wallace Parks and Recreation Board. He was a member of the Wallace Rotary Club. John was an active member of the Wallace United Methodist Church where he served his church in numerous roles.
John was a man who truly valued hard work and service to others. He was compassionate, generous with his time, and dedicated to his family. Some of his other hobbies and interests were hunting, golfing, boating, coaching and taking care of his family and friends.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Wallace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 3:00 at Wallace United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery in Wallace, NC.
