Joan Sullivan, age 87, a prominent civic and community leader of Paris, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living, Chrisman. Joan was very active in the community. She served as active member of the Chamber of Commerce beginning in 1973, serving as President in 1975. She served as the Executive Director from 1980 until 1991, when she retired. During her time with the Chamber she received many awards and accolades, including the Parisian Award, and initiated many projects around the City of Paris. She was a director on the Resource Development Council for four years and a delegate on the Illinois Tourism Council. Along with the Killion family, she was instrumental in helping get the Fall Festival changed to the Honeybee Festival. She also was instrumental in the planning and organization of the festival and parade. Joan planned Small Business Appreciation Luncheon, Spring Expo, "Aware of Paris" visits, "Promote Paris", three new "Welcome to Paris" signs, Newcomers Reception. She also was a key person in getting Up With People to Paris twice and getting the fountain on the Courthouse lawn. She was Chairman of the Public Awareness Committee of the Save The Lakes project. She received recognition from the Small Business Association, American Heart Association, Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts, Army National Guard, Paris Women's Club, and Indiana State University Homecoming Committee. She also received two resolutions, made on her behalf by Senator "Babe" Woodyard and Representative Bill Black for her dedication in helping her community. Joan worked for many years at both Lehmans Clothing Store and Inn Fashions. Originally baptized in the Methodist Church, she later in life was baptized in the Catholic Church, and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society. She was a Paris Community Hospital Volunteer and an avid bridge player. Born April 24, 1928 in Paris, Joan was the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Terrell) Haddix. She married Philip W. Sullivan December 27, 1970, he passed away July 28, 2008. Survivors include three children; Carole Blanford of Paris, Robert Blanford of Lubbock, Texas, and Richard (Shirley) Blanford of Terre Haute, two step-children, Bridget (Joe) Webb of Chicago and Pat (Jan) Sullivan of Seattle, Washington, four grandchildren: Amy (Brian) Ingram, JR (Sara) Blanford, Joey Blanford, and Katrina Lynch, three step-grandchildren; Betsy Webb, Owen Sullivan, and Gina Sullivan, and four great grandchildren; Jenna, Jacey, and Weston Blanford, and Laila Ingram. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers Michael Haddix and John O. Haddix, two sisters, Jackie Mullis and Jeri McCord, one grandchild Jeremy Joe Hudson, and her first husband Walt Blanford. Following cremation, a memorial graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2015 in Edgar Cemetery with Rev. Fr. David Zimmerman officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a local charity of the donor's choice. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
