James “Jim” Lee Poynter, 90, of Paris, IL passed away on April 15, 2026. Born on April 10, 1936 in Paris, IL, he was the child of William “Bill” and Charlotte Poynter.
Jim is survived by his children: Jim (Grace) Poynter and Mary Ann Poynter; grandchildren: Alliyah Poynter, Charles James Wright, and Robert James Zufall; and great grandson, Kolby Wright. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Poynter and his daughter, Linda Kay Poynter.
Jim worked for the railroad for 45 years and was known for comradeship with his railroad friends. He was preceded in death by his fellow railroaders: Don Knoepfel, Dick Nicholson, Jack Roberts, Bob Tague, Bob Alexander and Walter Switzer. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling with his family, going to flea markets and antique stores, and dancing with his wife.
Jim will be remembered for his commitment to his family, his love and devotion to his wife, his open yard policy for any stray animals, and beekeeping.
Jim also served with Illinois National Guard from October 4, 1954 to October 3, 1957.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Graveside service will immediately follow at Edgar Cemetery.
Our dad will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. We want to especially acknowledge Gracie Shelton, Kevin Gosnell Jr. and family, Lori Erwin and family, the wonderful members of the Hospice team, and all others who supported his care and his children during his final days.
