Herbert Rodney (Rod) Johnson Jr. age 67 of Paris, Illinois passed away at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday September 16, 2020 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Illinois.
No services are scheduled at this time. Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Rod was born February 21, 1953 in Fullerton, California the son of the late Herbert R. Johnson Sr. and Anna Schwintd Johnson.
His father was killed while delivering mail in 1958, leaving his mother, who has less than a third grade education, to raise 5 year old Rod Jr. and 3 year old Evelyn. The Post Master of Fullerton, California at that time told Mrs. Johnson that when the kids turned 16 years old, he would give them a job with the Postal Service. On Rod Jr's 16 th birthday, he was hired on at the Postal Service, where he worked for 36 years until his retirement as a clerk.
He married Ethel Jeannie Maxey Johnson on February 29, 1976 in Hillcrest Park, Fullerton, California.
Rod was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Paris Ward.
He is survived by his wife: Ethel of Paris, Illinois; his children: Thomas of Paris, Illinois, Todd (Tina) of Phelam, California, Alex (Kristine) of Paris, Illinois, Gary Mike of Paris, Illinois, Marylou (Travis) of Indiana; his grandchildren: Laidan, Natshia , Vanessa, Atlas, Titus, Athena, Creiton; his great-great grandchild: Wryn; his father-in-law: Jim; his brothers-in-law: Jeff, Tom and Mark; sister-in-law: Marylou (Travis); many nieces and nephews; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
Rod is preceded in death by his parents: Rod Sr. and Anna; sister: Evelyn; brother: Bob; nephew: Mark; infant: James; brother-in-law: Joe; best friend: Dave; uncle: Gordon, uncle Bill; aunt: Anna Mae; cousin: Billy.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Latter Day Saints in Paris, Illinois.
