Harold F. Waller, 91, of Paris, IL passed away at 3:45 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2017, at Paris Health Care Center. He was a retired farmer and had also worked as plant foreman for Unarco Home Products in Paris, Illinois and Ruston, Louisiana before his retirement at age 67.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Ron Hilt as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The flag presentation will be by American Legion Post 211 and V.F.W. 3601.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home, with the rosary recited at 3:30 p.m.
Harold was born March 8, 1926. He was the youngest of seven determined children born on the family farm south of Redmon to Leonard and Margaret Ryan Waller.
He married Dolores Ann Mattingly on January 8, 1955 at St. Mary's Church in Paris, IL. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2017. He is survived by two sons, Chris (Melanie) Waller of Noble, Illinois and Dr. Mark (Kathy) Waller of Bryan, Texas. Four grandchildren: Amy (Nick) Woodard of Clinton, Indiana, Rose Marie (Barrett) Reyna of Liberty Hill, Texas, Aaron (Cassie) Waller of Killeen, Texas, and Arianna Waller of Bryan, Texas. Three great-grandchildren: Colton Bettis of Clinton, Indiana, Cecelia and Remington Reyna of Liberty Hill, Texas, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Frank Waller; four brothers: Leo, Raymond, Eugene, and Albert; and two sisters: Eileen Smith and Loretto Nagorka.
Harold attended Waller school, a one room school house as a child. He attended Redmon High School and in his senior year during World War 2, was told if he had passing grades he could enter the service and pick up his diploma after returning home. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was attached to the Marine Detachment, USS San Francisco, where he fought in four major battles. Those being: the Philippine Islands, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and the South China Sea.
Upon returning home he worked at Paris Manufacturing until he saved enough money to start farming with his older brother Albert in the Brocton and Newman area, and lived on the farm that they farmed south of Newman. In January of 1966 he and his wife Dolores moved west of Paris on the Frank Mattingly farm where they later owned and farmed until his retirement.
Mr. Waller was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #860, Paris V.F.W. 3601, a 70 year member of the Paris American Legion Post 211, and the Edgar County Farm Bureau. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, and a life-long Democrat.
