Mattingly
December 11, 1928 – February 5, 2025
Frances (Joan) Mattingly, age 96, of Paris, passed away Wednesday morning February 5, 2025, at Horizon Health Hospital. She was born December 11, 1928 in Edgar County, a daughter of the late Hershel and Ruth Howald Brown. She was a native and lifelong resident of Edgar County, Illinois.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Mattingly, a son James Mattingly, sisters Katherine Sturgell, Maxine Cochran, brothers Forrest (Bud) Brown, Warren Brown, and Bill Brown. She is survived by daughters Bobbi Mattingly, Nancy Mattingly James, Beth Mattingly Chandler, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and special family Kathy Phillips and Marian Mattingly. The family lived 2 miles south of Vermilion, Illinois. She attended Vermilion Grade School and two years at Vermilion High School. She finished high school in Paris after consolidation.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church. She was active in Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America serving as Regent for the St. Mary's chapter. She was well-known in the community for her leadership and volunteerism for community organizations. Joan knew that it was more blessed to give than to receive. She had the gift of being able to make a difference in people's lives. Her radiant smile and enthusiasm lit up any room she entered. She helped every time she saw a need and always seemed to know what to do. She has been a great role model for 5 generations of her family.
Her involvement with home and community groups is evidenced by a long history of volunteer service. During her life she was active in over 50 local organizations that promoted family, school, and community, oftentimes taking leadership positions. In 2017 she was awarded the Parisian Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce for her volunteer service to the community. Joan was a member of the famed BBClub. She lived life to the fullest and especially loved spending time partying with her family. She liked competition and was hard to beat. Among her favorite pastimes were playing table games, shuffleboard, golf, bowling, and traveling.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with Rosary starting at 3:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris with Fr. Bruce Scott and Fr. Aloysius Ndeanaefo officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
