Donald Allen Salter, age 78 of Paris, passed away at 3:10 am Monday, May 20, 2024 at The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in Terre Haute, IN.

Visitation will be from 12 P.M.  – 2  P.M. on Sunday, May 26 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with the funeral to follow at 2 P.M.

Don was born April 3, 1946 in Dermott, AR.  He was the third child and only son of Norman Willis Salter and Donna Bess Aydelotte Salter.

Don married the former Rose Howard on September 23, 1978 in rural Paris.  They were married just short of 44 years before her death in September 2022.  They raised their two daughters, Cindy (Bart) Gosnell of Manor, TX and Tami (Brian) O'Bannon of Paris in a loving home. Don was Papaw to Adam (Rebecca) Gosnell of Jarrell, TX and Ryan Gosnell of Manor, TX and Great Papaw to Jody Gosnell Caldwell of Stratford,  OK and Joseph, Violet, August and Benny Gosnell of Jarrell, TX. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of his life.

He is also survived by two sisters, Nancy (Steuart) Matlock of Benton, AR   Carol (Buster) Stuart of Little Rock, AR as well as three sisters in law,  Linda Studey of Fairview Park, IN, Anna Curry, of Clinton, IN and Judy Jewell of Charleston, IL,  as well as many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Rose, his parents, and his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Dwight Clark.

Don was a Tool and Die Maker at several area companies as well as companies in Arkansas, Vincennes, IN and Flora, IL. He attended University of Arkansas at Monticello and served in the Arkansas National Guard after high school. A lifelong learner, Don attained his private pilots license in his 50's.  He enjoyed taking family and friends on sightseeing flights around the area.

Don enjoyed many hobbies over the years in addition to flying.  He and Rose liked to ride their motorcycle , fish from their pontoon on Twin Lakes and spend time with family.  In later years, Don served on the Board at Otterbein United Methodist Church.

Memorial Contributions in his name may be made to the Edgar County Humane Association.
