Donald Lee Harpring's Obituary

Donald Lee Harpring, 88 of Paris Illinois passed away on April 3 rd , 2018. He was born in Paris to John Lawrence and Ruth Harpring. Donald attended elementary school at St. Mary's, and graduated from Paris High School in 1947. On November 13 th , 1948, he married Norma Fox.

At age 11, Don worked for the Beacon News as a paper boy, and was later employed by Montgomery Ward, as well as Allen Locker Plant, and the Edgar County Locker as a Meat Cutter. He served 14 years in the Illinois National Guard and two years active duty as a forward observer in the Korean War, receiving a medal of achievement from the Chicago Tribune for outstanding service. Don worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Paris for 32 years, serving as the Postmaster during his final 10 years prior to his retirement.

Don worked with youth in the TEC (Teens Encounter Christ), and Cursillo Retreat Programs, and coached 5 th , 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th grade basketball for St. Mary's. He was a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 860.  Don, enjoyed woodworking, making furniture, hunting, fishing, playing golf, working crossword puzzles, and especially spending time with family. After his retirement he and his wife Norma enjoyed spending many winters in Ft. Myers Florida.

Don is survived by his wife Norma , two sons, Gary (Carole) of Bonita Springs, FL, and Jeffrey (Nancy) of Sherman, five grandchildren, Douglas Harpring, twins Cameo Christner, Catrina Virgil, Katie Harpring and Greg Harpring, four great grandchildren, Bridget and Wyatt Christner, and Noah and Ethan Virgil, a brother William (Marilyn) Harpring of Arizona, and two sisters, Pat (John) Cashen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Nancy (Don) Nealy of Shreveport. Louisiana. He was preceded in death by five siblings; Bob, Dick, and Tom Harpring, Betty Anderson, and Joan Harpring.

Visitation for Mr. Harpring will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 9 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with Rosary recitation at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Ronald Hilt officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Flag Presentation by American Legion Post 211.
