He is survived by his daughters Sherry (Jerry) Grimshaw of Modesto, CA, Diane (John Michael) Wall of Elgin, TX and Laura (David Avery) Hall of Missoula MT, grandchildren Jeremiah Grimshaw, Rachel (Amanda Wood) Grimshaw, Margaret (Adam Wayne) Smitherman, Aaron (Nancy) Hall, Callie (Brian) Hennington, Elijah (India) Wall and his great-grandchildren Norah Harty, Cecilia Hall, Jackson Hall and Galaxy Hall and his brother, Gary (Judy) Hall of Paris, IL.
Memorial visitation for both Dan and Twila Hall will be from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Memorial service will immediately follow at the funeral home.
Dan graduated from Paris High School, Paris, IL in 1953 then volunteered for active duty in the US Naval Reserve where he served for 3 years achieving the rate of Aviation Electronic Technician 2nd Class. Duties included servicing airborne communications radio, navigational equipment and fire control radar. While serving on the aircraft carrier USS Wright, he participated in Operation Wigwam, an underwater nuclear bomb test in the South Pacific.
Dan and Twila were married in October 1955 while Dan was still in the service. Upon discharge he enrolled at Indiana University and obtained a BS in Geology in 1961. He spent most of his career employed by a natural gas utility company in the upper Midwest where he was a pioneer in the exploration for and the development of underground natural gas aquifer storage projects.
In 1982 Dan and Twila moved from Faribault, MN to Austin, TX where he worked in the oil and natural gas industry, environmental consulting and in the real estate business from 1984 until 1990. Since he enjoyed publishing reports while consulting, he became the publisher of an Austin medical magazine MD News from 1994 until 1996. Until retirement he served as part-time independent ad agent for Senior News in Austin.
His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as a fun-loving, kid-at-heart who planned special vacations, camping trips and outings such as fossil and mushroom hunting. He never failed to say (and show) he loved his family dearly. Dan was a creative prankster who once convinced his children that he had found a severed finger on the railroad tracks. He had it in a box to show them and sure enough, there was a finger in a box, complete with blood! Their eyes popped out of their heads when that finger wiggled in the box and Dan started laughing, revealing it was his own finger in a hole in the bottom of the box.
One of the highlights of Dan's life was his work in the Boy Scouts where he served in several functions including Scoutmaster from 1974 to 1977 in Faribault MN. He delighted in leading troops on high adventures including trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and exploring wild and scenic rivers in Northern MN. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing and camping. In later years he took up woodworking and served as Secretary/Treasurer of Fine Woodworkers of Austin, a club devoted to service projects such as making flag cases for the victims of 911 and Christmas toys for children's hospitals.
Dan was a member of Hope Bible Fellowship of Round Rock TX, formerly Trinity Evangelical Free Church (Austin, TX) for many years where he served in various positions including Trustee, Church Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Elder.
The family would like to thank the staff at Avalon Memory Care of Cedar Park, TX and Hospice Austin for their excellent care and support during a difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you come and celebrate two lives well-lived.
