Carol Ann Svendsen, 83, a long-time resident of Paris, Illinois, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2019, at Marquette Manor in Indianapolis, Indiana, following a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, North Arm, with burial following immediately in the adjoining cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2019, at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with the Rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Carol was born on May 12, 1936, in Champaign, Illinois. She grew up in Peoria, Illinois. While she was a nursing student at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, she met Robert Knud Svendsen. They were married at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Illinois, on Oct. 26, 1957, and lived near their families in Pekin, Illinois, for several years. Moving to Springfield, Illinois; Alexandria, Virginia; and Park Forest, Illinois; Carol and Robert eventually settled on a farm on Sulphur Springs Road in Paris, Illinois, where they reared eight children.
Carol worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Paris Hospital, and Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. Attending both St. Mary's and St. Aloysius, she was a member of St. Aloysius Choir and supporter of Right to Life. An avid seamstress, she collected fabric, patterns, and sewing equipment throughout her life. She also enjoyed being a member of the Master Gardeners Club. Most of all, she was a dedicated wife and mother. She shared her husband's love of sailing on Muskegon Lake off Lake Michigan as well as dedication to praying for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Robert; her parents, Edward Mahoney and Caroline Tebben; her brother, Bob Mahoney; and her son, Kurt Svendsen. Survivors include her children Karen Werner and her husband John of Waco, Texas; Inger Svendsen of Margate, Florida; Knud Svendsen and his wife Stacy of Lone Tree, Colorado; Kirsten Van Hoy and her husband Brian of Trafalgar, Indiana; Janna Beattie and her husband Paul of Edwardsville, Illinois; Niels Svendsen of Urbana, Illinois; Heidi Somers and her husband Dan of Indianapolis, Indiana; fourteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Her surviving grandchildren are Aubrey Gonzalez , Sierra Svendsen, Dane Svendsen, Sarah Van Hoy, Ethan Van Hoy, Elliott Van Hoy, Elise Svendsen, Beck Svendsen, Carrie Pirtle, Addie Bradford, Jackie Beattie, Fia Svendsen, Kelby Svendsen, and Elainah Somers. Great-grandchildren include Naomi Gonzalez, Laila Gonzalez, Matthew Paul Bradford, and Evelyn Pirtle.
Memorial contributions may be made to Right To Life or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
