Betty Jane Keller Tyler passed away peacefully on September 2, 2016 at Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Illinois. She was born on April 16, 1926 in Akron, Ohio, the second child of Lillian Snowden (Twentyman) Keller and Charles Alvin Keller. She is preceded in death by her three younger brothers, Charles, Philip, and Russell. Her older sister Alice Keller Brodie survives and resides in Vallejo, California.
Betty's girlhood was spent in several eastern Ohio communities. During World War II she moved to Arizona where she worked as a telephone operator as part of the home front war effort. There she met and married Gale R. McClaughry of Waukegan, IL. The joy of their life together was the birth of son Robert. Later she married Roy E. Tyler of Edgar County, Illinois and was blessed with a second son, Frank Edward.
The two most important things in Betty's life were her deep and abiding faith and her love of family and friends. A life-long Lutheran, she forged treasured friendships at Grace Lutheran Church in Paris Illinois, and in the last few years of her life, she found new and dear friendship at St. John's Lutheran Church in Decatur, Illinois.
She is survived by her sons, Colonel Robert R. Tyler, USMC retired and his wife Carol (Albrecht) of Decatur, Illinois and Frank E. Tyler and his wife Jana (Vonderlage) of Paris, Illinois. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as five nieces and nephews, and beloved cousins.
A service to celebrate Betty's new life in Christ will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Paris, Illinois on Saturday, September 10, 2016. Visitation will be at 1:00 with the service, officiated by The Reverend Russ Weise of St. John's Lutheran Church in Decatur, IL, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Embarrass Cemetery in Edgar County following the service.
Her family also wants to express their heartfelt appreciation for the truly caring staff of Symphony of Decatur who, in recent months, showered Betty with concern, dignity, and affection. In her last few days, the staff of Decatur Memorial's cardiac care unit provided the highest level of professional care, always graced by kindness, and for that, her family is forever grateful.
