Bertha Elizabeth Egan, age 99 of Paris, passed away at 1:29 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Paris Health Care Center. Mrs. Egan was a graduate of Concannon High School in West Terre Haute, Indiana and a 1938 graduate of St. Anthony School of Nursing in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was registered nurse and worked at Paris Hospital from 1967 to 1979. She also had worked in the kitchen at St. Mary of the Woods. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, St. Mary's Quilters, and St. Anthony Alumni Association. She loved birds, gardening, and living in the country. Born January 18, 1916 in Terre Haute, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Vanzetta) Steppe. She married Howard B. Egan June 8, 1940 in West Union, Illinois. He passed away March 16, 1983. Survivors include her children; Cleta J. Harder of Brea, California, Mary A. Hackett and her husband Robert M. of Kansas, Illinois, John H. Egan and his wife Sherry (Quandt) of Decatur, Illinois, and Thomas Patrick Egan of Paris, seven grandchildren; Katherine Hackett of Terre Haute, Elizabeth Ealy and her husband Jim of Charleston, Ben Egan and his wife Jodi of Haymarket, Virginia, Paul Egan and his wife Christina of Nashville, Tennessee, Ray Harder of Brea, California, David Harder and his wife Lesa of Riverside, California, and Joanna Marriott and her husband Dean of Anaheim, California, six great grandchildren; Dylan and Lauren Ealy, Claire Lynn Egan, and Hannah, Timothy and Carrie Harder, three great-great grandchildren, a sister Lena (Steppe) Bird of West Terre Haute a brother Herman Steppe of West Terre Haute, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and seven siblings; Edna Unger, Mary H. Steppe, Joseph Steppe, John Steppe, Anna Tidd, Thomas Steppe, and Josephine Baldwin. Visitation for Mrs. Egan will be held from Noon to 1:45 p.m. Monday, May 18. 2015 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Monday May 18 in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. David Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Building Fund.
