Benjamin L. Garwood (Ben), 97 of Paris, IL, passed away at 3:51 PM, Sunday (July 30, 2017) while at home surrounded by family. Mr. Garwood was a farmer and an active member of the Saint Aloysius Catholic Church. Ben enjoyed being with family and friends, he never met a stranger and brought a smile to your day.
Ben was born on September 17th, 1919 in Vermilion to the late Ralso T. and Annabelle (Rinesmith) Garwood. He was also preceded in death by 6 brothers, Paul, James, Clyde, Harry, Elmer, Albert and 1 sister, Clara Ashmore.
He married the late Loretta M. Curl on June 3rd, 1941 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Paris.
He is survived by his children Donald Garwood of Indianapolis, In., Pam (Rick) Walblay of Westville, IL, Mike (Elaine) Garwood of Chrisman, Dean Garwood of Paris, Steve (Angie) Garwood of Chrisman, Sharon (Jerry) Porter of Dana, In, Mary Kay (Robert) Walblay, Waynesville, Ohio and Paula (Dennis) Lewsader of Chrisman. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild.
Mr. Garwood was a US Navy, WW II Veteran, who served as a member of the United States Naval Construction Battalion or Seabee's.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hunter Township, with Rev. Fr. Ronald Hilt as celebrant.
Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. A Rosary recitation will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday before the visitation.
